We enjoyed a very special Secondary Assembly today. The award-winning Emirati spoken word poet Afra Atiq came to GCS to talk to the students about the emotional power of poetry and recite one of her inspiring poems. Afra has won multiple poetry slams and competitions and was recently awarded the 2017 ADMAF Creativity Award – in fact, the first spoken word poet to win the award. She has been a featured performer and speaker at platforms like TEDxFujairah, Step Music Festival, NYUAD Arts Center, Sheraa, as well as at numerous universities and schools.
Afra also guest-judged the poetry slam competition between our four Grade 9 finalists:
Alice Viale, Grade 9A
Shehab Wabdan, Grade 9B
Mariana Abu Jamra, Grade 9C
Zuhair Aldahshan, Grade 9D
The poems written by the students were also performed by them with great passion and style on stage in the Auditorium.
We are delighted to announce that Afra chose Alice Viale as the winner of the competition – well done, Alice, for a beautifully written poem and a raw, evocative performance.
We believe that each of the four poems is so worthy of recognition and applause that we are going to publish them individually . . . watch this space!
