Learn How to Eat Mindfully

We know about Mindful breathing but what about Mindful Eating?

I hope all the students and their families are enjoying their summer holidays with their families and friends!  Last year, Ms. Rola Ghadban emphasized the importance of mindful breathing and understanding how breathing will increase oxygen in our brain, which results in better concentration and focus.  In same regards, having a mindful belly is just as important.

An article which I came across is from Dr. Justin James Kennedy, who visited our school and gave a brief introduction to myself, Ms. Ghadban and Ms. Fisher about the importance of mindfulness. While visiting our school he was impressed that we have two beautiful spaces dedicated to ensuring our students have the opportunity to relax, unwind and breathe.  He has written an article about having a mindful belly.

 Three Mindful Eating Tips

1. My grandparents, parents and I too ensure that my children finish all the food that is on their plate! I remember my parents use to tell me, “Farin, there are so many kids in Africa who never have food, and here you are wasting your food!  Finish what’s in your plate!”  Kennedy states that this is the main cause of obesity.  Therefore, use smaller plates and bowls.  Another suggestion is to wait 15 seconds before eating the next bite, so your brain gets fuller slower, than your belly.

2. Another way to consciously eat is chew on the other side of your mouth and switch sides.  This may make you eat slower and you may get fuller quicker and eat less.

3. In the morning eat fibre and fat first, which may boost your focus and memory before eating carbs and sugar. Replace your sugary treats with healthy nuts.  Plus, have big gulp of water between bites and before your meals – it is recommended to drink one litre of water every day!
