Friday 3rd March will see the opening of a unique Art Exhibition at the Novotel Dubai World Trade Centre, inspired by the IB project of Marsailie Shiyi Lin Troup of Greenfield Community School. Shiyi initiated this project, showcasing artworks by 15 high-profile and emerging artists, representing countries in which Dubai Cares has educational programs, to highlight female empowerment through education.

Shiyi explains what inspired her project: Empowering Girls Through Education is a global issue, central to the IB global context “Fairness and Development”, which I think is interesting and inspiring. I became aware of this issue when studying the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Millennium Development Goal 2 of Universal Primary Education. I found out from UN Girls Education Initiative (UNGEI) that there are 30 million girls out of school and even a basic education brings tremendous benefits to women throughout their lives. I decided to take action and help! I was inspired by Malala Yousafzai who almost died in defending her right to education and said “All I want is education and I am afraid of no one.”

Other strong influencers of Shiyi’s decision to focus on women’s education were words from His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who said “A country’s greatest investment lies in building generations of educated and knowledgeable youth” and Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak’s who said, “We believe strongly that the empowerment of women is important to the future of our country.”

The Art Exhibition starts on Friday 3rd March at Novotel Dubai World Trade Centre and runs through International Woman’s Day on 8th March. The exhibition is aligned with Dubai Cares global mandate: “To lead global efforts in ensuring children’s access to quality primary education, in developing countries, regardless of their gender, ethnicity or religion.”

“Empowering Girls Through Education” Art Exhibition is organised by Marsailie Shiyi Lin Troup and her partner The AJALA Project, and is supported by: AECOM, DWP DESIGN WORLDWIDE PARTNERSHIP, GUIDELINE INTERIORS, NOVOTEL Dubai World Trade Centre, and W2W Events & PR.
