Congratulations to our Under 9 football squad who have worked hard all season and were crowned league winners at this years’ football festival at the Rashid School for Boys.
Having collected their well earned trophy, a selection of the squad played other league winners and once again shined in front of a large audience.
The team got off to a positive start against Foremarke School, thanks greatly to the endless brave challenges from Aryan and Jan. Two very good sides continued to battle it out, with few chances being made and thanks to Vladic’s strong hands, the team were able to get their first point on the board.
After a tense and energy sapping first half against sister school, Dubai British School, the students re-grouped well and secured their first goal of the tournament thanks to a debutante strike from Vincent. Hadi and Omar continued to cover a lot of distance to help maintain possession and were disciplined whilst keeping a strong back line formation which enabled Federico, Lian and Gabe to impress in midfield. When DBS equalised, it was crucial that the addition of Hadi in midfield would help protect a valuable point. He didn’t disappoint, making endless tackles and passes to ensure that Greenfield Community School finished the game on the front foot.
All three league winners had drawn with each other and the only way of separating all teams was by goal difference. Another opportunity for our principled students to congratulate their opponents whilst keeping their chins up for their ‘Finals’ game against Wellington.
The old saying ‘Leave the best to last’ was certainly fitting as our under 9 team took to the field for their final game of the season. Our captain Omar, like he had done all afternoon, led by example. His focus and passion was equally matched by all squad members. A 20-yard free kick from the captain brought the Greenfield Griffins back to 1-1 at a crucial time in the game. This was shortly followed by another clinical strike from Vincent. With two late goals, from the ever impressive Aryan, GCS were able to finish their campaign on a high note!
An incredible season with lots learnt about one another. We are sure that the boys will contain to shine and succeed in all areas of their school life and we look forward to hearing about their future sporting successes, both in and out of school.
Mr Burden and Mr Hein would like to both express our gratitude to all the under 9 footballers who have attended the ECA club and football fixtures throughout the season. May we also thank our supportive parents who have encouraged and worked alongside us throughout the year and wish them and their families a peaceful winter break.
